Following the recent purchase of this landmark Grade 11 listed building in the centre of Teignmouth by a local investor, represented by Tony Noon of Aaron Fox, they are now delighted to confirm the completion of the lease to a local restaurateur for the ground floor restaurant and first floor bar.
The Riviera was conceived in 1826 when Lord Courtenay (The Earl of Devon) and 40 share holders financed the construction on neo-classical lines of a building to be in the centre of Den Crescent on Teignmouth’s sea front and intended to be used as assembly and reading rooms for the gentry of the district. The building was then sold in 1884 and became a hotel before becoming a ballroom, Cinema and theatre in 1912, continuing as a cinema until it finally closed in approximately 2000 when it then began to fall into disrepair. The Riviera Cinema was then subject to a substantial refurbishment some 2 years ago but has for the last 9 months lain empty after the restaurant that occupied the ground and first floors closed.
Tony Noon of Aaron Fox confirms that they had a significant amount of interest from operators for the restaurant, and were delighted to have completed the lease to a local businessman, Russell Hailstone and his fiancée, Sandra Wiggins. They have joined forces with Teignmouth born Barney Mason, a renowned Master Chef of Great Britain to re-open the restaurant under the new name of ‘TAKE 2’. Their aim is to offer quality food, created by Barney, throughout the day and evening with a café and takeaway, upstairs and downstairs bars and restaurants at value for money prices and to suit all tastes.
Russell Hailstone says “The Riviera is an outstanding building and synonymous with the history of Teignmouth. With the interior refurbishment being completed to a very high standard it will offer a unique venue where people can relax and enjoy food and drink of the highest standards. The initial opening is planned for Friday 3rd July with the restaurant available for bookings from Friday 10th July.” This is clearly an excellent development for Teignmouth as nobody in the town was keen to see this landmark building empty throughout the season.
Tony Noon from Aaron Fox says they are now actively seeking a tenant for the magnificent 450 seater theatre/cinema auditorium area in the centre of the building which will be available once the refurbishment has been completed. This area could accommodate either a theatre or cinema operator or a “show and dine” cabaret style venue. Alternatively it could suit a leisure use such as an exhibition / Gallery area, Conference venue, crèche or children’s play area or alternative leisure uses, subject to the usual consents. Further details including a suggested rent are available on application.
